TUESDAY JANUARY 3, 2006
Kaleidoscope
is a juried art show for local artists in the Akron area, held annually at Summit Art Space in downtown Akron. This year's show runs through 1/7/2006.
The show offers something for everyone, from traditional oil paintings to installations, and everything in between. It also reveals a cross-selection of artistic points of view, from a piece entitled "Re: Art Sucks" to peaceful pastoral landscapes.
I entered two watercolors, and one was accepted. This is a great honor, as many local artists exhibit great talent in their work.
Every show is an opportunity for me to practice Matthew 5:13-16 and bring salt and light to my culture with my work. With this in mind, I was thrilled when I discovered my humble watercolor winter scene bathed in a pool of light.
Whoever hung this show saw more in it than I had ever seen.
As one turns to enter the side room, it becomes the focal point.
It's almost as if a path invites you in.
During the artist's reception, I saw two women walk right up to the painting and comment on the delicate shadows cast by the weeds, "Look at that!"
Were they drawn by the light?
Aren't we all?
Don't we all want to leave our darkness behind?
"Ye are the salt of the earth, but if the salt have lost its savor, with what shall it be salted? It is thereafter good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a lampstand, and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father, who is in heaven."
—Jesus (Matthew 5:13-16)
